Collaboration with iPads
With improvements to the iPad operating system as well as upgrades to a handful of apps that allow for student creativity, collaboration with iPads is now possible in a way that was not conceivable when the devices were first introduced to the classroom. Through a combination of cloud storage platforms and apps that allow for student creation and creativity, final products that demonstrate student understanding and learning can be created, collaborated on and published directly from iPads. Synchronous, asynchronous, multi-iPad and single iPad collaboration possibilities and scenarios will be explored in the session. Collaborative, student created products will range from podcasts to websites, screencasts, digital books, writing and video.

Engaging Students in a 1-1 Classroom Environment
Do you have a hard time keeping students focused when they each have a computer in front of them? Well this workshop will demonstrate several great projects that have helped Beverly High School meet this challenge. A critical element to the success of our 1-1 program, now in year 3, has been on-going teacher professional development including a very popular Professional Learning Community (PLC). The theme for this year's PLC was “ Blended Learning to Support Personalized Instruction”. This workshop will be facilitated by the district Technology Director and two teachers that support their colleagues with technology curriculum integration. Using a student made video, we will highlight 4 – 6 projects from different subject areas that were implemented as a result of this year's PLC. Each video segment will focus on a specific project that supports the PLC theme, including flipped classroom, web 2.0 tools, Moodle, Turnitin, game based learning, and project based real world learning. You'll see interviews with teachers and students as well as samples of student work. Time will be allowed for Q&A with teaching staff and a brief overview of our 1-1 laptop program model.

Fundamentals of Collaborative Instructional Design
Common Core alignment. Standards and competencies. Maps and charts. Flipping a class. Curriculum, technology, and teaching staff have a lot of projects to manage these days. It’s necessary - and daunting - to nurture productive communication among stakeholders. At The VHS Collaborative, we encounter these challenges every day. We work with our worldwide teaching staff to design courses that support our successful model of facilitated, cohort-based online learning. This is a process that takes a lot of targeted communication and training. When the instructional designer is in one location and the subject matter expert is in another, problems can arise. It takes a whole box of tools to keep the project moving ahead smoothly. This past year, we’ve found a number of tools that fit the bill, and we’ve developed some best practices around them. We’re excited to share those findings with our friends at MassCUE. At The VHS Collaborative, digital learning and global connections are our bread and butter. Our mission is to partner with schools and teachers from all around the world to create unique online learning opportunities for their students. This past year, our members made it possible for 18,000 students to complete core and enrichment courses online.

Google Apps for the iPad
Two of today’s biggest names in the world of educational technology are the Apple iPad and Google Apps for Education (GAFE). Many school systems are attempting to bridge the gap between the highly popular and functional mobile device and the great tools available within GAFE accounts. In this session, participants will learn what apps and tools from any Google account can be accessed and utilized through an iPad. Participants will gain knowledge in two key areas: ***Workflow: “How do we get access to everyone’s stuff?” We will focus on helping participants develop a workflow for creating and sharing documents and experiences via Google Apps for Education on the iPad with students and other teachers. ***Apps: Learn key components of the Google Drive app as well as other quality apps in the Google universe. We will also look at how third party apps are enhanced by or help enhance your experience with GAFE on the iPad. Participants will leave the session with a clear list of apps and resources for using them. Participants will also leave with access to a quality workflow and ideas on how to modify the workflow to fit their individual situations.

Managing iPads in a Shared Environment
Many schools have been struggling to deploy and manage iPads and other iOS devices in a shared environment. Managing iPad labs and iPad carts in such an environment is a very different task than managing iPads in a 1:1 environment, and because there is no one-size-fits all solution, many schools, IT staff, and classes are suffering. We will discuss the most common hurdles encountered by schools with these shared setups, and we will walk through the pros and the cons of management tools provided by Apple and 3rd parties (Apple's Configurator, Apple Profile Manager, and 3rd party tools like Casper). Each of these management tools can unearth additional potential issues that also require attention. This session will provide an overview of these hurdles, possible solutions, and will allow for discussion of pros and cons as well as strategies to simplify the management of these devices.

SCRO is utilizing funds awarded from the DESE Fund 115 Grant to Encourage Regional, Collaborative and Cooperative Services to connect 35 districts and 8 collaboratives throughout the southeast to professional development offerings. By creating an SCRO ‘cloud’ that connects each district to each collaborative and to the larger SCRO organization, professional development offerings can be made available to all educators in the region and available seats in sessions can be more efficiently utilized. The project also provides tools to districts to manage professional development record-keeping. The workshop will showcase the tool and the outcomes of the project.
