In both face-to-face and online classes, when students discuss course content they learn more and they gain ownership of the material. In order to have meaningful discussions in an online course environment the instructor needs to create a safe and supportive place for students to exchange ideas. This presentation will describe explicit strategies for increasing student participation in online courses by building a learning community. We will also discuss strategies for supporting online course development and teaching that have proven to make the online experience engaging and satisfying for both students and instructors. Details of how to implement the strategies will be shared. The seminar will show participants how to: 1. Optimize use of introductions. 2. Increase the effectiveness of the instructor as a model for interaction. 3. Promote substantive participation with a grading system. 4. Generate ownership of content and increase participation with student moderators. 5. Expand understanding of the content and build community by implementing voice conferences. 6. Create forums that support the learning environment. The techniques that will be discussed have been learned, tested and practiced by the presenter who has taught online courses since 1996
